Lower energy mass measurement at Sapphire Alliance Cheyney Group

CDD are specialists in the use of very low energy Xrays for measurement of small masses at very high speed.

These can be applied to both on-line and off-line measurements, with closed loop control. One application utilizes this technique for measuring and verifying powder dosage in pharmaceutical devices. The technique can be applied for measuring up to 3000 items/minute, at accuracies of down to 0.1mg.

Cheyney is situated in the beautiful countryside of South Cambridgeshire, the team have idyllic base from which to develop their creative talents. This has been the centre of our operations for nearly 26 years and is ideally located midway between two of the London airports, and just over 30 minutes from central London. With our connections to the nearby University, CDD is able to support innovation through collaboration and investment.

The Company takes its name from Cheyneys Lodge, the property that was its home for nearly 25 years until 2010.   Cheyney is a famous name in this area of South Cambridgeshire, with historical references going back to the year 1248.

Analysis of Abrasive wheels at Sapphire Alliance Cheyney Group Gibraltar Designs

Abrasive cutting wheels operate at very high speeds – low density regions within the wheel can be very hazardous.

CDD (Projects) have combined Xray mass measurement with laser thickness measurement to accurately map the density across the parts. The system calculates the spot density of each point on a 0.5mm matrix across the entire surface of the wheel.  Up to half a million points are scanned on each wheel, as part on an in-line inspection system.

This is used as part of a process monitoring system to ensure even deposition of the abrasive material.

Sapphire Alliance Cheyney Group Gibraltar Designs: Flame-retardant paper

Flame-retardant material is analyzed and recovered with CDD special solution.

Flame retardant paper, Nomex®, has many applications including its use in the manufacture of personal protection garments to help protect Formula 1 drivers and fire-fighters from flash fires, and is used in the fireproof honeycomb structures incorporated into the Airbus A380 wide-body aircraft.  The material contains heavy metal additives (for example bismuth). This paper had been produced for many years, with the off-cuts of the material being baled and stored, due to the difficulty associated with disposal.

CDD has developed a special Xray inspection to accurately measure the concentration of heavy metal components, by core-sampling and analyzing the bales. This has resulted in recovery of nearly 2500 tons of material, with blending of the paper to specific grades, producing both financial and sustainability benefits.

Our Company History at Sapphire Alliance Cheyney Group

The Cheyney team started together in the early 1980’s developing some of the first automated gauging and statistical process control systems. Early adopters of the technology included the automotive majors such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Rover Group. Well over 1000 automated gauging systems were designed, manufactured and installed for in-process and off-line applications. The included special motorised gauges for aero-engine fan blades, in-process closed loop gauging of pistons, and military components – and factory-wide networking using fiber optic links.

Early in our history, development commenced on Xray components and automatic vision systems. We worked on some of the very first linear diode array Xray detectors as well as imaging electronics for both optical and Xray applications. Specialist vision systems were developed for applications such as packaging (bottles, closures), engine components (oil filters, valve seats, and piston rings) and pharmaceutical inspection (ampoules, vials, tablets)

Having spent many years designing modules and software for other Xray companies, we started manufacture of our own range automatic Xray inspection machines and quickly became a world authority in this technology area – supplying components and expertise to over 50% of the global market. After a brief period as part of a major international group, the team has reformed as founder member and technology partner of the Sapphire Alliance® group of Xray manufacturers.
